Instant Pot Orange Mulled Wine | Glühwein Recipe - Recipes From A Pantry (1)

Christmas is *kinda* coming (any excuse peeps, any excuse), which means drinks like Instant Pot Mulled Wine are now on the menu. This traditional Glühwein aka a German drink is a well-loved staple served over the festive holiday and throughout winter especially at Christmas Market stalls.

And nothing beats the cozy smell of spiced mulled wine, so even more reason to make it. And friends, it could not be easier to make.

It is simply a case of putting all the wine, orange juice and mulling spices in the Instant Pot and letting it simmer. A few mins later and out comes a rather delicious and more-ish German Glühwein.

Want to make it adults-only? Then add in some rum at the end. Even better is that the Pressure Cooker will keep the mulled wine warm till you are ready to serve (if you can wait for longer than 5 mins, you are stronger than me……).

FAQs

What Wine To Use For Glühwein?

You can make your Glühwein with pretty much any red wine you want. However, this is best made with everyday and more inexpensive wines. Those lovely and more expensive bottles of wine are much better kept for a special or "I just want a good bottle of wine" occasion.

Even better, use those bottle of red wine that you were gifted and did not like - since the lovely flavor of the spices and citrus will really transform your wine.

FAQs

How do you make store bought mulled wine? ›

If you'd rather buy a pre-made bottle of mulled wine, we've tested them to find the very best. Pour the contents out into a saucepan, and gently heat over a gentle heat to warm through.

How do you make mulled wine without burning off the alcohol? ›

Heat until the wine almost reaches a simmer over medium-high heat. (Avoid letting it bubble in any way. Alcohol begins to vaporize at 172°F, so take care to ensure that the wine does not evaporate.) Reduce heat to low, cover completely, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.

How can I improve my shop bought mulled wine? ›

During the Christmas period, some stores will sell ready-prepared mulled wine and these are generally improved by adding extra citrus and a flavoured spirit or liqueur. Try our top mulled wine recipe and take a look at our mulled wine collection for more ideas.

What is the best wine to make mulled wine? ›

The best red wine to use for mulled wine is Merlot, Zinfandel or Garnacha (also called Grenache). These wines are dark, fruity and full bodied, which means they can support all of the flavors we'll be adding. Look for labels that describe the wine as “jammy” or with “notes of vanilla.”

Why does my mulled wine taste bad? ›

You need to infuse the wine long enough with the spices to take on their flavour but DON'T ON ANY ACCOUNT LET THE MIXTURE BOIL as you'll be left with a bitter taste. Slow and low is the way to go. And it shouldn't be served piping hot, just comfortably - and comfortingly - warm.

Can you overheat mulled wine? ›

The key to successfully heating up mulled wine is to take it up to a nice warm temperature without boiling it. Wine has a lower boiling point than water, and overheating it will cook off some of the alcohol, resulting in an unpleasant bitter flavour.

How much alcohol burns off in mulled wine? ›

How much alcohol will be left will depend on a few variables: How much you start with, how long it is cooked and at what temperature, and what kind of vessel it was cooked in (an open shallow pan will evaporate faster than a smaller container with a lid). Of course, this also relates to cooking with wine.

What does Mull mean in mulled wine? ›

The word “mull” means to “to heat, sweeten, and flavor (a beverage, such as wine or cider) with spices,” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Indeed, mulled wine, or spiced wine, is served and enjoyed while hot, making it a perfect drink for the holidays.

Is mulled wine good for you? ›

The red wine base in mulled wine brings its own set of health benefits. Resveratrol is associated with heart health benefits and may help protect the lining of blood vessels, lower bad cholesterol levels, and prevent blood clots. When consumed in moderation, red wine has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease.

Can you drink mulled wine straight from the bottle? ›

Yes. Even though the spiced wine is heated, most of the alcohol remains.

Can you use cheap wine for mulled wine? ›

Your ideal mulling wine is an inexpensive, inoffensive, young merlot, burgundy, petite syrah, tempranillo, beaujolais, or other "middle-of-the-road" wine, maybe slightly on the sweet side.

Can you use regular wine for mulled wine? ›

Red wines are traditionally used to make mulled wine, and while any red wine can work, sweet reds will give you a nice, sweet base, meaning less sugar added in later. If you use a dry red, keep in mind you may need to add more sugar than a recipe calls for.

How long to heat pre made mulled wine? ›

How to heat mulled wine. You can reheat mulled wine by warming it over a low heat on the hob. Alternatively, pour the liquid into a heatproof bowl and microwave for 2 mins 30 seconds-3 mins until warm, but not boiling.
